Story #4
Sudar and College:
I received admission in B.Sc. Chemistry to Lady Doak College but, since the fees there were very high, I could not go there. I have joined the Meenakshi College for the same program. My parents are very happy that I am studying in a college.
I like both computer science and chemistry, and I am studying chemistry because I got admission only in that. My parents are not educated and they want me to study well to come up in life. And, they have admitted me in Sudar so that I could improve my knowledge in different areas. In the college, most of the lectures teach their subjects without worrying about whether we understand. Since the medium of instruction is English, several students find it difficult to understand. The spoken English course I attended at WEP’s Sudar Center during summer helps me to understand what is taught in the college. I have finished the spoken English course and now I am doing other courses at Sudar. The fees are very low and the computer can be used any time. I can make use of the reference books in the library; also, I can browse and learn several things on the net. I come to Sudar daily to read English story books.
I have taken good marks in the college tests. My aim is to become a teacher. In Sudar, I learn flash card preparation, and painting work. I also visit old age homes and I enjoy the love and affection shown by grandmas and grandpas. WEP-Sudar is doing very good work for women’s education. Its computer lab and library may be enlarged to be of better service to students.
Home:
My native place is a village. My neighbors are close relatives and they are very affectionate to me. My family consists of my parents, three sisters and one brother. My father is a coolie, a daily wage earner. My house is small but beautiful. It is surrounded by trees and is comfortable. There is no open drainage, no mosquito problem, and the area is neat and clean. We grow trees like mango and drumstick. When I am at home I help my mother in cooking.
My close friend is Muthu Priya; she is a very good girl. She is an intelligent student. Her parents and brothers are working in a foreign country. Her mother is a housewife and her younger brother is studying. I like all of them and they are very affectionate to me. Priya is a calm and quiet girl. She never becomes angry. She helped me a lot in my studies and only because of that I got good marks. Since I am studying in Madurai, I am able to see her often.
