Women’s Education Project’s Third Annual

First Generation College Women

For a woman, anywhere, to be the first of her family to graduate from college, the benefits are enormous – to herself, her family, her community, country, and ultimately, humanity.  This year, Women’s Education Project’s third Beyond Borders Forum will shine its spotlight on first-generation college women – telling their stories, how higher education impacted their lives, and what they have done to change the world.

Date: Monday, October 7, 2019
Place: Scholastic, 557 Broadway, New York, NY
Time: 6:00 – 9:00 PM

WEP New York scholars, first-generation college students, will conduct a global panel, teleconferencing with Amazon Director and WEP-India Board Member Shalini Puchalapalli and WEP alumnae and students, to discuss their stories of change and creation of gender equality in their classroom, workplace, and community. Guest speakers will discuss the opportunities and impact of first-generation college women in society and the marketplace.

The Red Bangle

WEP’s Fifth Red Bangle, an award given annually to an “exceptional woman, who by her life and accomplishment demonstrates the eloquence of the human spirit and inspires others to higher goals,” will be presented during the evening. Past recipients have been Kayce Jennings of Girl Rising, Shabana Basij-Rasikh of School of Leadership Afghanistan (SOLA), Saba Ismail of Aware Girls, Pakistan, and Esther Subhashini, WEP-Hyderabad Director, India.

A NETWORKING hour of cocktails and appetizers for the anticipated 200 guests concludes the evening.

The program’s highlight will be the inauguration of WEP’s I Am a Leader Academy,  our initiative in India for WEP students to discover their inner leader by gaining skills and confidence and enlarging their vision to pursue a career of their own.
